Terms of service

Studybase is operated by Shidhartha Sen, an individual based in Saskatchewan, Canada. By creating an account or using the service you agree to these terms. If you do not agree with them, do not use Studybase.

You must be at least 13 years old. If you are under the age of majority where you live, you may only use Studybase with the permission of a parent or guardian, and they are agreeing to these terms with you.

Studybase is offered to individual students. It is not offered to schools or districts for assigned classroom use, and using it that way is not permitted.

Sign-in is handled by Clerk. Keep control of your login, and treat everything done through your account as your responsibility. Tell me if you think someone else has got into it.

You own the notes, files, messages, flashcards and quizzes you put into Studybase. Nothing here transfers ownership.

To actually run the service I need a limited permission from you: to store, back up, display and transmit your content so the app can show it to you, and to show it to the teammates you deliberately share it with. That permission is non-exclusive, is limited to operating Studybase, and ends when you delete the content, except for content you shared into a team, which stays with that team as described below.

I will not use your content for marketing, will not pass it to anyone else to use, and will not use it to train machine learning models.

You are responsible for what you upload. By adding a source you confirm you own it or otherwise have the right to upload it, and that sharing it with a team is allowed.

I do not review or monitor uploads before they appear, and no endorsement of anything uploaded is implied.

If you hold rights in material that has been uploaded to Studybase without permission, email me with enough detail to identify the material and your claim, and I will remove or disable access to it. Accounts that repeatedly infringe will be closed.

Anything you add to a team is visible to that team, and members may be able to edit or download it depending on their role.

If you leave a team, what you contributed stays with the team, so that the shared workbench continues to work for the others. If you own a team, you have to transfer ownership to another member before you can leave it.

You can connect an outside assistant such as Claude or ChatGPT to your Studybase account. If you do, it can read and write your notes, flashcards and quizzes, and that content leaves Studybase and is governed by that provider's terms rather than mine.

Choosing to connect an assistant is your decision and your responsibility, including whatever the provider does with what it receives. You can disconnect it at any time. Automated use is rate limited so that one connection cannot degrade the service for other people.

Studybase is a study aid. It is not a substitute for doing your own work, and using it does not excuse you from your school's rules.

You are responsible for following your institution's academic integrity policy, including not using Studybase or a connected AI assistant during an exam or on any assessment where outside aids are not allowed.

Do not use Studybase to:

• Break the law, or upload material that is illegal to possess or share.
• Harass, threaten or abuse other people, including in team chats.
• Upload malware, or anything designed to damage another person's device or data.
• Get at accounts, teams or content that are not yours, or try to work around the checks that keep them separate.
• Scrape the service, overload it, or evade rate limits.
• Resell or rent access to Studybase.

Studybase is free, and is built and maintained by one person in their own time. There is no guaranteed uptime, no support commitment and no service level agreement. It is provided as is.

Features may change or be removed, and the service itself could be suspended or shut down. If I intend to shut it down I will give reasonable notice in the app beforehand and, where I practically can, a way to export your material first.

Keep your own copies of anything you cannot afford to lose. Do not treat Studybase as the only place your coursework exists.

If paid plans are ever introduced, the terms and prices will be shown to you before you are charged anything.

You can stop using Studybase and delete your account at any time. How deletion is handled is set out in the privacy policy.

I may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms, or where keeping it open puts other users or the service at risk. Where it is reasonable to do so, I will say why first.

To the fullest extent the law allows, Studybase is provided without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including that it will be available, uninterrupted, error free, or that content stored in it will not be lost. Material generated in the app, such as quizzes and flashcards, may be wrong, and you should check it against your actual course material.

To the fullest extent the law allows, I am not liable for indirect, incidental or consequential loss, for lost data, or for academic consequences arising out of your use of Studybase. My total liability relating to Studybase is limited to one hundred Canadian dollars (CAD $100).

Nothing in these terms removes or limits any right you have under consumer protection legislation that cannot be waived by agreement. Some jurisdictions do not allow certain exclusions, so parts of this section may not apply to you.

These terms may change. If a change matters, I will update the date at the top and give notice in the app before it takes effect. Continuing to use Studybase after that means you accept the new terms. If you do not, close your account.

These terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Saskatchewan and the laws of Canada that apply there. Disputes will be dealt with by the courts of Saskatchewan, except where the law where you live gives you the right to bring a claim somewhere else.
